During the Global Science Summit of the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the major philanthropies Novo Nordisk Foundation, Gates Foundation, and Wellcome announced that they will be joining forces “to accelerate global health equity and impact”. They will commit 300 million USD over three years starting May 2024. The details and topics of their collaboration can be found in their press release here. For reference,

  • Novo Nordisk Foundation is a private Danish foundation supporting projects to improve people’s health and the sustainability of society and the planet. Open calls can be found here.

  • Gates Foundation (previously Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) is an American philanthropy aiming to give every person a change at a healthy, productive life. Poverty, health, and education are among their priorities. Some grant opportunities are listed here, but in the Grants Office’s experience, most awarded grants are invitation-based by project officers of the Foundation to researchers with topics of interest.

  • Wellcome is a global charitable foundation supporting science for health challenges such as climate change, infectious diseases, and mental health. Open calls can be found here.

In the same Global Science Summit, Novo Nordisk Foundation announced a call for international consortia, even though most of their funding over the past 100 years is aimed at Danish researchers:

• Topics: proposed projects should cover at least two of the following:

  • climate change

  • non-communicable disease, in particular cardiometabolic diseases

  • infectious diseases

  • related enabling technologies

• Budget: ~1,000,000 USD per project over 1-3 years

• Consortium eligibility: 2-3 partners, interdisciplinary, synergistic, preferably from different countries

• Application: online questions corresponding to ~3 pages of CV-type questions + 3 pages of project/impact description + abstracts + hosting institute letter

• Deadline: August 8th, 2024 to submit the application to Novo Nordisk

Internal deadline: July 15th, 2024 to submit to Grant Manager

• More infowebsite and guidelines

We encourage all interested researchers to consider this opportunity and to reach out to the Grants Office early to discuss your potential application: GOinternational@pasteur.fr.
