The European Union (EU) identifies cancer as a major and growing societal challenge. It estimates that i) 2.7 million people within the EU are diagnosed with cancer each year, with 1.3 million succumbing to the disease, ii) without additional measures, the number of new cancer diagnoses will increase each year to over 4.3 million by 2035.

In response to this global challenge, the European Commission has launched the Mission Cancer, aimed at improving the lives of over 3 million people by 2030 through prevention, cure, and the opportunity for cancer-affected individuals, including their families, to live better and longer.

To achieve this, the mission is structured around four objectives, each advocating for equitable access:

  1. Understanding cancer

  2. Prevention and early detection

  3. Diagnosis and treatment

  4. Quality of life for patients and their families

The Cancer Mission's Implementation Plan sets out the key actions that will be implemented during the lifetime of the mission and in that sense, Horizon Europe offers concrete funding opportunities on the topic of cancer. These are advertised in a specific part of the work programme: the mission work programme. In addition, the European research and innovation partnerships, for example the Innovative Health Initiative, should contribute to the implementation of the mission cancer with specific tenders.
